SCRS DINNER/LECTURE, March 31, 2009

SCRS is happy to announce the Next Dinner/Meeting/Lecture will be on March 31, 2009. The topic will be an important lecture regarding “Ankylosing Spondylitis and Related Diseases: Dramatic Advances in Their Early Diagnosis and Effective Management” given by Muhammad Asim Khan, MD, MACR, FRCP, Prof of Medicine Case Western Reserve University. In addition we will be having on of our local fellows from Stratos Christianakis, MD from USC speak on“Difficult case of Ankylosing Spondylitis”.

Remember it will still be 6:30 PM cocktails; 7PM Meeting/Lecture/Dinner---Support your SCRS and be there and bring your fellows and guests! Don't forget to RSVP to kconti@arthritis.org

Swamy Venuturupalli, MD: President welcomed all members. The minutes from the October 16, 2008 Meeting Minutes were unanimously approved. Boris Ratiner, MD, Treasurer presented the budget for the SCRS as of January 20, 2009. Dr. David Klashman was awarded a plaque for his outstanding service as SCRS President for 2007 & 2008. Pamela Prete, MD, Public Health Committee Chair made announcements on behalf of the Arthritis Foundation. Program Chair: Samy Metyas, MD read the CME announcement, thanked Scius for sponsoring the lecture. He introduced the speaker: Vibeke Strand, MD, FACP, FACR, Adjunct Clinical Professor, Immunology/Rheumatology, Stanford University Medical Center. The title of her lecture was "Treating to Remission with Biologics in Rheumatoid Arthritis". Discussion and questions followed the lecture. The meeting was adjourned at 9:30 pm.

David Klashman, MD, President called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm. He welcomed members and introduced the guest speaker Marilynn G. Punaro, MD, Professor of Pediatrics, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Director, Arthritis Services, Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children Topic: "Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis"
The minutes from the previous meeting 7.15.08 were unanimously approved. Dr. Swamy Venuturupalli presented the budget for the society as of October 15, 2008. The 2009-2011 Southern California Rheumatology Society Officers were unanimously approved.

Dr. Xavier Caro confirmed that the SCRS standard practices/protocol is to award the out-going president with a plaque for his or her outstanding service. Dr. Caro agreed to form an Ad Hoc Subcommittee for the President’s Award to be presented at the first meeting in 2009.
The SCRS members unanimously committed to donating $5,000 to the Ad Council Initiative Announcement. Manuel Loya, President & CEO, Arthritis Foundation gave and update on the success of the Arthritis Foundation Gala and thanked everyone involved. Mireya Peña, VP, Community Programs & Services, Arthritis Foundation updated the society on the success of the “Doc in a Box” campaign and thanked all members who are participating. Boris Ratiner, MD introduced the guest speaker, Marilynn G. Punaro, MD and read the CME announcement.
This was followed by a question and answer session. Meeting was adjourned at 9:30 pm.
